How much can a cargo bike carry?
Most cargo e-bikes have a total load capacity of 300–500 lbs, including the rider. An Urban Arrow Family can carry up to 550 lbs total; an Aventon Abound LR up to 440 lbs. In practice, most NYC families with two kids are well within the limit.
Total capacity vs. cargo capacity
Total capacity includes you. So if you weigh 180 lbs and the total limit is 440 lbs, you have 260 lbs of cargo capacity — more than enough for two kids and groceries. Always check the total system weight limit and subtract your weight.
Key numbers
- Urban Arrow Family: 550 lbs total
- Aventon Abound LR: 440 lbs total
What 440 lbs looks like in practice
- Rider: 180 lbs
- Two kids (ages 4 and 7): ~80 lbs combined
- Groceries and bags: 30 lbs
- Total: 290 lbs — well within 440 lbs

What to watch
Don't exceed the stated total capacity. Also check the specific weight limits for accessories — the cargo box, child seats, and panniers each have their own limits.
Kids get heavy fast —
A 5-year-old and 7-year-old together weigh 80–100 lbs. By 8 and 10, they might be 100–130 lbs combined. Factor in future growth when choosing your bike.
