The short version: cargo bikes are legal, you don't need a license, and kids can ride along. Here's everything you need to know.
New York recognizes three classes. Whee! sells Class 1 and Class 2 bikes.
The motor assists while you pedal and cuts off at 20 mph. Permitted everywhere bikes are allowed — including protected bike lanes and greenways.
Includes a throttle that can propel the bike without pedaling. Legal in NYC, but restricted on some parks and greenways.
Pedal and/or throttle assist. Speeds up to 28mph. We believe these are too fast for the bike lane.
New York state law requires helmets for riders ages 1–13. For riders 14 and older, helmets are legally optional — but strongly recommended.
Working cyclists (e.g. delivery riders) aged 16–17 are also legally required to wear a helmet.
NYC passed new battery safety laws following a rise in e-bike fires from uncertified lithium batteries. All e-bikes sold in NYC must now use UL-certified batteries and chargers.
Whee! bikes comply with UL 2849 (complete e-bike system) and UL 2271 (battery) standards.
Translation: the battery in your Whee! bike is one of the safest available. Our service plans include maintenance and battery care — we handle it so you don't have to think about it.
No license. No registration. No DMV. Just you, your kids, and the bike lane. Come feel what all the fuss is about.
