Helmet rules for kids on cargo bikes in NYC
NYC law requires all bike passengers and riders under 14 to wear an approved helmet. This applies to cargo bike passengers too. The helmet must be CPSC certified and properly fitted. Our absolute favorite helmet is Ozmo, Brooklyn born and the only certified e-bike helmet for kids.
How to fit a helmet correctly
-
1
Level — sits level on the head, not tilted back
-
2
Two-finger rule — two fingers fit between eyebrows and the front edge
-
3
Side straps — form a V just below the ear on each side
-
4
Chin strap — snug, one finger fits between strap and chin
-
5
Stability — no more than one inch of movement in any direction
When to replace
After any significant impact. Every 3–5 years regardless of impacts, or of course when it no longer fits.
Let kids pick their helmet —
Kids are more likely to wear a helmet they chose themselves. Ozmo has some great designs.
